V. Chinatown and Italian North Beach/Cameo Icons

Chinatown and North Beach are two San Francisco neighborhoods that have become iconic destinations unto themselves—if one judges by the number of visitors and the quantity of photos taken there. Fortunately for visitors, they are remarkably proximate to each other—making it easy to explore them together: walk up Grant Street in Chinatown, turn right when it ends, and immediately you are on Columbus Avenue in Italian North Beach.

Both neighborhoods need to be investigated on foot. You could easily spend a day prowling around here with your camera, perhaps morning for Chinatown—since the markets are more vigorous in the morning—and afternoon for North Beach, when a languorous hour of café idling may beckon the tiring photographer. Your pleasant dilemma in such a day’s venture will be: in which culinary world will you choose to have lunch?

Aside from these unique neighborhoods, San Francisco also boasts three special smaller and much-beloved icons, each worth an hour of your photographic attention. Let’s call them cameo icons. Immerse yourself in the Crookedest Street, Coit Tower, and the Ferry Building, and you will emerge with a somewhat better understanding of why life is fun, amusing, and interesting in the City.
